Osteocalcin is a protein produced by osteoblasts and plays an important role in bone formation. The laboratory value measures the concentration of osteocalcin in the blood and is used to assess bone metabolism.
An Osteocalcin test is recommended for: • Patients with suspected osteoporosis or other bone diseases • Monitoring of patients undergoing therapy to strengthen bone substance • People with symptoms such as bone pain or repeated fractures • Diagnosis of bone diseases such as Paget's disease or hyperparathyroidism
The test serves to assess the activity of osteoblasts and bone formation. It is also helpful for monitoring therapies in osteoporosis or other bone diseases.
A high osteocalcin value indicates: • Increased bone formation in osteoporosis or after fractures • Paget's disease or hyperparathyroidism • Growth phases in children and adolescents A low value can indicate: • Decreased bone formation in osteoporosis • Hormonal disorders such as hypoparathyroidism Symptoms with deviating values can be: • Bone pain • Increased risk of fractures with low values
The testing can be carried out at any time of the day. For follow-up checks, a constant test time is important.
Osteocalcin is often measured together with markers for bone resorption (e.g. BetaCrossLaps) to assess the overall bone metabolism. Elevated values in children and adolescents are physiological and not pathological. Chronic diseases such as kidney diseases can influence the values.
