Parathormone is a hormone that is produced by the parathyroid glands and regulates the calcium and phosphate metabolism in the body. The laboratory value measures the concentration of PTH in the blood to evaluate the function of the parathyroid glands.
A parathyroid hormone test is recommended for: • People with symptoms such as muscle weakness, bone pain or tingling in the extremities • Patients with abnormal calcium or phosphate levels • Patients with chronic kidney disease (to monitor secondary hyperparathyroidism) • People suspected of having overactive or underactive parathyroid glands
The test serves to diagnose disorders of the parathyroid gland function, such as hyperparathyroidism (overfunction) or hypoparathyroidism (underfunction), as well as the evaluation of calcium metabolism.
A high PTH value can indicate an overactive parathyroid gland, which can lead to: • Elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) • Bone loss (osteoporosis) • Kidney stones A low value indicates an underactive function, which can be characterized by symptoms such as: • Muscle cramps or tremors • Tingling or numbness • Low calcium levels (hypocalcemia)
The testing can be carried out at any time of the day, but ideally fasting, as food can influence the calcium values that interact with PTH.
• PTH should be interpreted in combination with calcium and phosphate values. • Vitamin D deficiency can increase the PTH value, as the body tries to maintain the calcium level. • Chronic kidney diseases often lead to secondary hyperparathyroidism, which must be monitored specifically.
