Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and is responsible for regulating blood sugar levels. The laboratory value measures the insulin concentration in the blood, especially in the fasting state, to assess the function of the pancreas and the insulin level.
A sober insulin test is recommended for: People with suspected insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes Persons with symptoms of hypoglycemia (e.g. trembling, sweating, weakness) Overweight or obese patients with metabolic syndrome Women with suspected polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) Patients with existing diabetes for monitoring insulin therapy
The test serves the diagnosis of insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia (excessive insulin production) and the clarification of disorders of glucose metabolism. It is also used to monitor insulin production in patients with diabetes.
A high insulin level in the fasting state often indicates insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Symptoms may include: Weight gain, especially in the abdominal area Fatigue after carbohydrate-rich meals Dark discoloration of the skin (acanthosis nigricans) A low insulin level can indicate impaired insulin production, as in type 1 diabetes or pancreatic insufficiency.
The testing should be carried out in a fasting state, that is, after at least 8 hours without food intake. This ensures meaningful results, as meals strongly influence insulin levels.
• The insulin value should often be measured in combination with the blood sugar to calculate the HOMA index (a marker for insulin resistance). • Certain medications such as corticosteroids or antidiabetics can influence insulin levels. • Increased insulin production over a longer period of time can lead to weight gain and inflammation and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
